Jamal al-Din al-Afghani (1838/39–1897) is known as a political thinker who had a profound influence on the Islamic world in the 19th century. He has long been understood as a proponent of anti-imperialism and pan-Islamism, but in recent years, researchers focus on his views on ecology or other issues. In this workshop, we will welcome Dr. Karam Abbas from the Department of Philosophy, Faculty of Arts, Cairo University, and together with Japanese researchers, present the latest research findings and engage in a discussion on the contemporary significance of Afghani’s intellectual legacy.

Speakers:

Karam Abbas (Cairo University) “Al-Afghani’s Ecology ideas”
Yoshiko Kurita (Chiba University) “Jamal al-Din al-Afghani: His Ideas on War and Racism”
Hiroki Okazaki (Asia University) “Importance of Two Figures: Al-Afghani and Abduh”

Moderator: Yoshiaki Mihara (the University of Tokyo)
